You Summer City Break In Berlin
The Berliner Dom is a cathedral that was built 1894 and 1905 and is located on the well known ¨Museum Island.¨ It would be unimaginable to think if you see this building today but back in 1894 it was demolished under the orders from Emperor Willem the II. The cathedral that you see today is the building that replaced the structure and old cathedral that once existed.
It is also important to mention that the Berliner Dom’s construction was much larger than any of the previous buildings and it was also considered to be a Protestant counterweight to the St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
Unfortunately during World War II, The Berliner Dom was hit by a fire bomb which severely damaged much of the Cathedral. Furthermore up until 1975, only a temporary roof was installed as a result from the damages sustained from the fire bomb. Reconstruction then finally began in 1975 in order to restore and bring the cathedral to its former glory. This particular construction however was only focused on the exterior of the church. Restoration on the Berliner Dom’s interior began a few years later back in 1984.
The church’s original design was modified into a more simplified form and the Berliner Dom was in 1993 officially reopened to the public. Today the Berliner Dom can be enjoyed and experienced at any time or occasion as it is opened on a daily basis. The choice is then left up to you as to when it would be more desirable in visiting the Berliner Dom. It is therefore suggested and recommended to arrange all of your appartement in Berlijn ahead of time. Depending on the length of your stay it is advised to either book one of the many hotels in Berlijn. If you wish to stay for a longer or prolonged period of time, then it is more economical to lodge in an accomodatie in Berlijn.
The Berliner Dom replaced an older cathedral but not all of the older cathedrals possessions were replaced. Inside and within the halls of the Berliner Dom, one can truly relish and admire a piece of history as the main altar which was saved from the previous cathedral dates back to 1850. The Berliner Dom further boasts intricate decorations with mosaic materials. Furthermore, visitors can climb to the dome’s outer balcony which is made easier by a wide stairwell. This as a result makes the church more interactive and allows and gives access to the public to all of its quarters. Needless to mention is that amazing views from the city can be taken from this vantage point allowing you to forever cherish the pictures taken on your visit to the Berliner Dom.
